Vihiga Queens' coach Boniface Nyamunyamu is looking to shift both Enez Mango and Phoebe Owiti to their initial striking role should the team's attack prove blunt in the 2022-23 season.

Vihiga are currently depleted in attack after the trio of Jentrix Shikangwa, Topista Situma and Tereza Engesha left for pastures green overseas.

The trio's exit left the team with the inexperienced duo of Agnes Olesi and Emmaculate Wangila as the only available options.

Mango and Owiti were natural attackers before being converted to a left-back and center-back respectively by the then title-winning tactician Alex Alumira.

The pair have delivered a composed and unflinching performance in their manager's image after overcoming tactical flaws.

"As Vihiga, we are famed for producing top strikers. Situma, Shikangwa and Engesha have all starred for Harambee Starlets too and we will miss their services," Nyamunyamu posed.

"Olesi and Wangila are viable options who have the qualities to thrive in the cut-throat  Kenya Women's Premier League but they are still learning the trade. There's pressure for them to deliver and fill the void left but success doesn't happen overnight."

The trusted lieutenants will only be called upon in case goals dry out for Vihiga. "I expect them to start the season as our main attackers but when push comes to shove, Mango and Owiti can still play up top. They are tried and tested and it won't be an issue to adjust."

Mango has negotiated every obstacle thrown in her way to become the most decorated club captain in WPL. The buccaneering player whose magical left foot has left opposition defenders kissing the ground boasts of four titles with the Legacy Makers.

Her stellar career also includes the Cecafa club trophy won last year in Nairobi as the county-sponsored side 'dined with the big girls in the inaugural CAF Women's Champions League staged in Egypt.

Awiti, also known as 'Berlin Wall', was the unsung hero in Queens' title triumph in June. Vihiga leaked in a meager 10 goals in 22 matches in their unbeaten romp to the gong.

Vihiga have over the years produced quality strikers and it is down to hard work in training according to Nyamunyamu.

"Most of our training sessions are spent on sharpening the attack. During training, we work on pace, power, positioning and technique because these are the ingredients that make up a good striker."
