Fly weight boxer David Karanja has vowed to use the preliminary round defeat at the World Boxing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia as a learning curve to his quest for qualifications to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Karanja lost to Luis Delgado to cap a dismal performance for the Hit Squad in the invitational boxing tournament.

“Even though we did not get the results we wanted, individually and as a team, it was a great experience. I had the chance to learn from the best coaches in the world. They helped me get to know my mistakes and what I should work on to improve as a boxer and that was the biggest positive,” remarked Karanja.

The Ruai-based boxer continued: “I also had the chance to spar with some of the best boxers in the world, who are so experienced. I learnt some of their training and fighting techniques of which I have already incorporated in my training sessions.”

The African championships silver medallist will be among the many boxers who will be competing for slots to the Commonwealth Games during the Jamal Cup that will take place at Charter Hall later this month.

“It is my objective to represent my country at an international tournament. That is why I took little rest after the World Championships. I am fully focused on qualifying for the Commonwealth Games and the Paris Olympics,” said the diminutive fighter.
