Two-time Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association (NRSSSA) boys basketball champions Agoro Sare have vowed to go for their third title this
year.
Agoro Sare,
coached by Paul Odock, has been to the regional finals since 2017, and in 2024,
the Homa Bay County giants lost in the national finals by a single point
against Dr Aggrey.
They fell
71-70 in a closely contested final and qualified to represent the country at
the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA)
games in Mbale, Uganda.
Speaking on Thursday, Odock said: “Our target this year is to reclaim the
Nyanza title and also qualify for the FEASSA Games in Tanzania.”
He said they
have intensified their preparations. “We won the Asumbi Girls Open tournament
and reached the semi-finals at the Amadi Open in Maseno. The game
was, however, rained off. The two tournaments have helped us in our
preparations,” Odock noted.
He said they
are ready for the Agoro Sare Open this weekend. “This will be our
last open tournament. We shall organise some friendly games before the sub-county
games kick off,” he noted.
He said
among the schools expected to feature in the event are defending Nyanza
region champions Sawagongo, former champions Maseno School, Kisii School, Nyanchwa
Boys, St Joseph’s Rapogi, Orero Boys and Mbita High School, among others.
“This will
be like a Nyanza region championship because of the quality of the teams that
will take part,” added Odock.
The girls’
category has attracted Nyanza champions Asumbi, Rae, St Albert’s Ulanda, and Nyangajo. The tournament
will also feature hockey, handball, rugby 15s, volleyball, and racquet games.
At the same
time, the annual St Joseph’s Girls Kitale Indomie Kenya tournament will take
place on Saturday and Sunday at the school.
The school’s head of games department, John Lusaka, said he expects more than 30 teams to take part in the girls’ only tournament. The Rift Valley powerhouses will use the tournament to prepare for the Term One games later this month. The tournament will feature football, volleyball, basketball, hockey, netball, rugby 15s, rugby 7s, handball, lacrosse, and cricket.
