12 teams set to grace inaugural Eliud Owalo Foundation tourney

Runners up will bag Sh200,000 with the third and fourth-place finishers walking home with Sh100,000 and Sh50,000 respectively.

Twelve teams (six men and six women) will battle it out for Sh300,000 at the inaugural Eliud Owalo Foundation basketball tournament set for May 10-12 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

In the women's division, Storms, KPA, Equity, Zetech, Strathmore and USIU are ready to battle it out for supremacy.

KPA, Ulinzi, USIU, Equity Doomers, Thunder and Strathmore will vie for men's title.  Runners-up will bag Sh200,000 with the third and fourth-place finishers walking home with Sh100,000 and Sh50,000 respectively. 

Additionally, outstanding players in categories such as Most Valuable Player (MVP), Top Scorers and Best Defensive Player will each receive cash prizes of Sh20,000.

Speaking at the tournament's unveiling at the Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium, ICT CS Owalo said the objective of the event is to provide upcoming players with a platform to showcase their talents.

"We are all former players and we aim to give back to the basketball fraternity. Our objective is to allow players to play national basketball and get scholarship opportunities," Owalo noted.

Owalo stressed the importance of fostering competitiveness within the local leagues to bolster Kenya's presence on the continental stage.
