Nyanchwa Boys stunned Kisii School 50-46 to reclaim the Kisii County Secondary Schools Sports Association boys’ basketball title.
In a highly entertaining and tension-packed match played at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, Nyanchwa raced to a 12-9 lead in the first quarter before Kisii staged a fightback to lead 21-16 in the second.
Kisii went into the halftime break with a narrow 30-28 lead. Nyanchwa coach Kepher Mogire rallied his boys at halftime and they responded with 16-11 and 06-05 advantage in the third and fourth quarters.
“The final was intense and we expected a big fight from Kisii School, being the defending champions. However, I had a strategy. I fielded my second team in the first half and the first team in the second half,” said Mogire.
In the girls’ category, St Angela’s Sengera — coached by Kennedy Wekesa — outclassed Kereri Girls 66-36 for a third title in a row.
Sengera thrashed Igorera 58-09 in the first semifinal while Kereri saw off Sameta Mixed 30-14. Sameta Mixed finished third after a 14-12 win over Igorera.
The four-day championship was sponsored by Nyanza Sports Vibez. They donated trophies, medals and kitted the officials.
Kisii School, the Nyanza region 15s champions, thrashed hosts Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, 46-03 to retain the title. The finalists will proceed to the regional championships to be held at Kisumu School from March 19 to 23.
In the semis, Kisii School overcame Nyabigena 34-00 while Cardinal Otunga beat Rioma 32-00. Nyabigena settled for third place after seeing off Rioma 28-07.
Nduru Boys retained the boys’ hockey title for the third consecutive year after a hard-fought 2-1 penalty flicks win over hosts Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. The teams drew 0-0 at full-time.
In the semis, Cardinal Otunga beat Riokindo 2-0 while Nduru defeated Sameta 2-0. Sameta beat Riokindo 1-0 in the third-place playoff.
Amaiko Mixed Secondary reclaimed the girls' title after a 2-0 win over Kereri Girls. Immaculate Adhiambo and Agnes Nyaboke.
After losing the 15s and hockey finals, Cardinal Otunga got a consolation in handball after beating Ndonyo 24-22 to lift the boys’ title.
In the girls’ category, Ndonyo beat Amaiko 22-14 to retain the title for the third consecutive year.
