KCB RFC’s interim coach, Andrew Amonde, believes there is still room for improvement despite his side’s commanding 87-5 victory over Impala to kick off their Kenya Cup campaign in Ruaraka.

The former champions ran in 13 tries to Impala’s single try, but Amonde feels there is more to come from his team.

“There is still a need to improve in all aspects of our play, but this is a solid marker for the season ahead,” said Amonde.
“We need to build momentum. There are a couple of areas we can do better, and we’ll be tested mentally and physically. We have to be on point from start to finish.”
Despite the dominant performance, Amonde is keen to refocus quickly as KCB prepares for a tough away test against Kisumu RFC in Match Day 2.
“We can enjoy today’s win, but Kisumu away is never easy. We must reset, recover, and prepare for another big challenge,” he added.
The bankers, who clinched the national sevens title in September, are aiming for their first Kenya Cup crown since 2021. In their win over Impala, KCB scored 47 points in the first half and 40 in the second, with Floyd Wabwire, Mike Wekesa, and Joseph Wanjala each bagging a brace of tries.
Samuel Asati, skipper Felix Ojow, Fidel Maina, Vincent Onyala, and Brandon Lusisa also crossed the line, while Brian Wahinya kicked over eight conversions. KCB moved to the top of the table with the win.
Impala’s lone try came from George Okowa.
In other matches, defending champions Kabras RFC had a dominant 67-6 victory over Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in the Lurambi derby at the Kakamega Showground.
Kabras led 26-6 at halftime, with Asman Mugerwa, Roy Maruti, and Griffin Chao each scoring a brace. Jeanson Misoga, Barry Robinson, and Teddy Akala also got on the scoresheet for the sugar millers.
Menengai Oilers, last season’s runners-up, cruised to a 76-16 win over debutants Daystar Falcons. Harlequins had to fight hard to overcome Nakuru RFC 23-18, while Nondies beat Kisumu 36-12 at the Racecourse Grounds.
Strathmore Leos pulled off a shock 32-20 victory over Blak Blad in a titanic battle at Kenyatta University.
The Kenya Cup action continues to deliver thrilling rugby, with all teams eager to make their mark in the early stages of the season.
