The national cross country championships will now be held in Eldoret, Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei has announced.

Tuwei said the event will now be held at Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County, not Prisons Training College in Ruiru, as earlier announced.

The date remains February 8.

Tuwei did not reveal reasons behind the change.

Tuwei made the announcement at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, in Kisii, as the six-part Betika/ AK cross-country series concluded.

He wants athletes to attend the 34th edition of Discovery Cross Country on January 26 as well as the regional meetings.

County championships are set for January 11 while regions will select their teams for nationals by January 25.

After the national cross country championships, action will move to Kakamega for the first AK track and field weekend meeting on Feb 13 and 14.

The cross-country season will conclude with the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Tour at Lobo Village on February 23.

Tuwei wants athlete support personnel to ensure their runners are registered in good time.

“The rule requires that athletes must register a day or two days before and not on the day before the event. No athlete will be allowed to run if you are not registered. Some teams and athletes were disqualified because they did not register,” Tuwei said.

Athletes must also register with AK as part of the enhanced anti-doping programme.

“From the first of January this year, no athlete will be allowed to run if you don’t appear in that register. If you have not registered, you can still do it at our offices in Eldoret or Nairobi,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Tuwei reiterated the essence of staying clear of age cheating.

“When we were doing registration, we identified some under 20 athletes who did not have the correct documentation. Anybody engaging in age cheating will be dealt with. We have a team from AK and government agencies to deal with this issue,” he said.
