Rachuonyo will host the Kenya Teachers’ Training Colleges Sports Association (KTTCSA) Nyanza region athletics championship next week.
The two-day championships will be held at Kosele grounds in Homa Bay County on June 29-30, according to Lucas Okinda, the KTTCSA Nyanza region secretary.
Okinda, who is a physical and health education tutor at Asumbi Teachers’ Training College, said the institution is expected to continue with its dominance. Asumbi will, however, face a stiff challenge from perennial rivals Migori and Nyanchwa Adventist.
Asumbi bagged last year’s title when the regional championships resumed after a three-year hiatus.
“I’m happy we have fully resumed. Last year, we held our regional championships but we did not proceed to nationals. Only a few colleges took part in last year’s event. This time, we shall send a full team for the nationals,” said Okinda.
The event has also attracted Migori, Kenyenya, Borabu, St Paul’s, hosts Rachuonyo, Kamagambo Adventist, and Nyanchwa Adventist Teachers Training College.
The two-day track and field championships will be used to select a team to represent Nyanza at the national championships to be held at Machakos Teachers Training College from June 2-6.
“We want to select a very strong team for the nationals. It’s always tough at the nationals, especially with competition from Western and Rift Valley regions,” said Okinda.
