Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions Sports Organisation (KATTISO) Lake Region championships will be staged at Asumbi Teachers Training College (TTC) on May 2 and 3.

KATTISO Lake Region Secretary General, Edward Sogoni, said 29 institutions will take part in athletics, three in floorball and eight in table tennis and badminton.

“Initially, we wanted to hold the championship on May 3 and 4 but since the Nyanza North regional track and field championships will be on May 4  at Moi Stadium in Kisumu, we decided to adjust the dates,” said Sogoni.

The two-day championships will be used to select a team that will represent the region at the KATTISO nationals to be held at Nyayo National Stadium from May 16 to 18.

“We expect a highly competitive two-day championship. Keroka TTI remains a force to reckon with having dominated athletics in the past. They will, however, face stiff competition from perennial rivals Mawego, Siaya and Riatirimb among others. It will be an exciting two days,” Sogoni added.

Keroka emerged overall winners in last year’s championships at Gusii Stadium, beating Mawego TTI to second place and Siaya to third place.

Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT), Kisii National Polytechnic and Kisumu National Polytechnic will battle it out in floorball.

Floorball is a versatile indoor team sport played on a 40 x 20m surface in a rink.

Each team has five field players and a goalkeeper on the field at the same time. Floorball is played with plastic sticks and a very light ball and with a goalkeeper without a stick.

Siaya TTI will seek to defend their men’s table tennis title while Ekerubo Gietai from Nyamira County will hope to protect their women’s trophy.

Keroka TTI will face stiff competition from Ekerubo Gietai and Siaya in their bid to defend both the women’s and men’s badminton titles.
