Sawe targets Prague Half Marathon crown this weekend

Sawe finished eighth at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade over the weekend.

A week after representing the country at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Sebastien Sawe parades at the Prague Half Marathon this Saturday.

Sawe finished eighth at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade over the weekend.

“I gained enough experience in Belgrade and I will use that at the half marathon on Sunday,” said Sawe, the World Half Marathon champion. 

The national cross-country champion has gained experience in the 21km distance after winning the Berlin Half Marathon last year, the Bahrain Half Marathon 2022 winner and the 2022 Rome-Ostia Half Marathon among other events.   

In Prague, Sawe, who has the best time of 58:29, will be up against compatriots Geoffrey Toroitich (59:13) and Ugandans Gideon Kiprotich and Maxuel Rotich (60:06) among others.

Last year, Sawe won the World Half Marathon in Riga, Latvia, where he led Kenyans Daniel Simiu and Samuel Nyamaito to a clean podium sweep.

In the women's race, Kenyans Jesca Chelangat and Vivian Melly will be up against Ethiopians Nigsti Haftu and Gete Alemeyehu.

Meanwhile, Kenya's Napoli Marathon champion Angela Tanui will be chasing another title at the Daegu Marathon in South Korea on Sunday. 

Among the starting lineup, Tanui has the best time of 2:17.57 and will be up against Kenyan-born Romanian Joan Chelimo, Vivian Kiplagat and Sandrafelis Chebet among others.

In men's races, Sammy Kitwara returns to action alongside former Kenyan-turned-Turkish Kaan Kigen Ozbilen, formerly Mike Kigen, and  Gideon Kiprotich among others.

In Paris, the focus will be on former London Marathon champion Vivian Cheruiyot as she takes to the streets of the French capital on Sunday.

Cheruiyot, who is the 2016 Rio Olympic 5,000 gold medallist, will be seeking to gauge her strength after returning from an injury.

The multiple-world champion will be up against Ethiopians Buzunesh Getachew, Rahma Tusa, Etagegne Woldu, Haven Hailu and Gelete Burka among others.

In the men's category,  Kenya will be represented by Elisha Rotich, Hillary Kipsambu, Brimin Kipkorir and Titus Kipruto. The quartet will be up against Ethiopian nemesis including Mekuant Ayenew, Chalu Deso, Bazezew Asmare andGizealew Ayana among others.
