Veronica Mutua has exuded confidence as the Kenya relay team gears up for the ASA Grand Prix Continental Tour this evening in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The races are set to take place at the University of Johannesburg from 5 pm. Team Kenya has fielded 17 athletes in the 4x100m men, 4x400m (men and women) and the 4x400m mixed relay.
Mutua, who will feature in the 4x400m mixed relay, is scheduled to compete at 7.55 pm. The men’s 4x100m will be at 6.00 pm with the 4x400m men and mixed relay slated for 7.50 pm and 7.55 pm respectively.
An upbeat Mutua said the team is more than ready for the South African test and described the weather conditions as conducive. “We're primed for success. The weather mirrors Kenya's, so it won't be a hurdle,” Mutua assured.
Beyond the glory in Johannesburg, Kenya eyes improvement in ratings and times for the impending World Relay Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, where only the elite 32 teams will secure a spot on May 4-5.
Mutua added that the team had light training earlier in the day ahead of the evening showdown.
“We arrived on Tuesday evening and did some light training in the morning in readiness for the races later today,” she stated.
Meanwhile, eyes are on Mike Mokamba for the 200m dash with Tyson Juma and Isaac Omurwa chasing glory in the 100m sprint.
Mark Otieno is set to double the excitement in the 100m and 200m showdowns.
