The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has unveiled a rigorous capacity-building programme to sharpen Team Kenya sprinters ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
NOC-K said the initiative — dubbed the Sprinters Programme — is meant to turn around the nation's fortunes the short races.
The pilot programme has roped in the 4x100m (men), 4x400m (men), 4x400m (women) and the mixed relay teams.
The selected athletes are already sharpening their talons at Nyayo Stadium, where they will benefit from a structured environment aimed at sharpening their skills and fostering teamwork under head coach Stephen Mwaniki.
NOCK Secretary General Francis Mutuku expressed confidence in the programme's capacity to bolster Kenya's medal prospects in the short races.
"There are plans for the team's participation in the ASA Grand Prix continental tour challenge in Johannesburg, South Africa, followed by a camp in Miramas," Mutuku stated.
"The team will then proceed to the Penny Relays and culminate their preparations at the World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas on May 4 and 6," he added.
Team captain Mike Mokamba expressed gratitude to NOC-K for the support while highlighting the historical significance of past achievements.
"I want to thank NOC-K for coming on board to support the sprinters. We reported to camp on Monday, and so far, we are comfortable. We desire to bring back memories of the 1972 Olympics," Mokamba stated.
Barnaba Korir, Athletics Kenya Youth Development Chairman, and Deputy Chef de Mission to Paris 2024 emphasised the importance of discipline and focus among the athletes.
"We are fully committed to ensuring the team's qualification and an ultimate podium finish in Paris," stated Chief Executive Officer to Paris 2024, Wanjiru Karani.
NOC-K has provided the 17 athletes with the necessary equipment and full kit thus far.
Five athletes, including 800m world champion Mary Moraa, are absent from camp as they prepare for the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Moraa will fly directly to South Africa and join the team for their next phase of training.
Meanwhile, NOC-K President Paul Tergat has underscored the importance of hard work and qualification, emphasising NOC-K's commitment to providing proper care and support to the athletes.
“We're enlisting sponsors to bolster this programme. As a former athlete, I understand its significance. I implore you to stay focused,” Tergat remarked.
