Omanyala to lead Team Kenya to World Indoor Championships

The team led by AK’s treasurer David Miano, is currently in training and will depart for Glasgow on February 28.

Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala leads a star-studded squad of 11 athletes 11 to the World Athletics Indoor Championships from March 1-3 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Omanyala, who will be taking part in the 60m, holds Africa’s record in the 100m with a time of 9.77, which he set in  2021 to become the ninth fastest man of all time.

The 28-year-old recently won the 60m during the Miramas Metropole-silver Indoor Championship after clocking a meet record of 6.52  seconds, a personal best, and a national record.

In 2022, Omanyala ran 10.02 to win the 100m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

He further clinched the 100m title after clocking 9.93 during the African Championships in Saint Pierre, Mauritius the same year. He was also part of the 4x100m relay team that set a national record of 39.28 in the same event.

World 800m silver medallist at the 2022 World Indoor Championships, Noah Kibet is once again part of the team and will be seeking to improve. 

Kibet clocked 1:46.35 to place second at the 2022 edition in Belgrade, Serbia. He is also the 2021 World U20 800m bronze medallist in an event. He will be joined by Collins Cherop. Vivian Chebet,28, will be the sole will be the sole representative in the women's 800m.

World junior record holder in the mile Reynold Cheruiyot will take part in the 1,500m. He set the record in Eugene, Oregon in 2023 after clocking 3:48.06. He will have the company of Vincent Kibet.

The 2021 World U20 3000m gold medallist, Teresia Muthoni starts favourite over the distance.

He was part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games team that won a bronze medal in the men’s 4x400m relay.
