Kipyegon tastes defeat in Riga as she settles for bronze in the mile

Double world champion Faith Kipyegon suffered her first loss of the season when she finished third in the women’s mile at the World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia.

Kipyegon, who has been outstanding this year — breaking three track world records — started the race at a searing pace with Ethiopian Diribe Weltaji keeping close tabs in second place during the opening stages.

Kipyegon looked on course to clinching another global title before faltering in the final 100m as Weltaji passed her to win gold in 4:21.00.

Another Ethiopian, Freweni Hailu, also coasted past Kipyegon to grab the silver medal in 4:23.06 as the Kenyan took the bronze medal in 4:24.13. Nelly Chepchirchir came home fourth in 4:31.18

It was a dismal afternoon for the Kenyan contingent in the men's race as Kyumbe Munguti finished a distant 13th in 4:00.67 while Reynold Kipkorir was further down at position 22 in 4:05.91.

The race was won by USA's Hobbs Kessler in a world record time of 3:56.13. Great Britain's Callum Elson was second in 3:56.41 as Samuel Prakel of the USA rounded off the podium positions in 3:56.43.
