Kenya Pipeline coach Paul Gitau wants his charges to rise to the occasion during  African Clubs Volleyball Championships starting this weekend in  Tunisia.

Gitau, whose contract with the club ends in August, is eager to leave a legacy with the KVF league defending champions despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The oil merchants will be seeking to end an 18-year continental title drought.

"I want to make history even though I know my contract runs down in August. I have done it with other teams, and now is the time to achieve that with this team. The girls have come of age and have a point to prove," Gitau said.

He was speaking at the company's headquarters during the send-off ceremony yesterday.

Pipeline have won six continental crowns with the last one being in 2005. The team, whose rebuilding started in 2020, has been on the ascendancy, thanks to the blend of youth and experience the squad boasts.

A 14-member final squad was named last weekend and the team hopes to go one step better after bagging bronze at the same venue last year.

On his part, the company's Human Resource Committee chairman, Ken Wathome, wants the players to develop a winner's mentality.

"You must believe you are all winners and no one is average. Strong team culture, togetherness and discipline make well-oiled teams champions," he said.

The Pipeline team chairman, Paul Njuguna, said the company has an elaborate plan to improve facilities to enable the team to train in a conducive environment.

"We have a grand plan to put up our own gym in Embakasi. We would also love to have external sponsors come on board. We have come from far as a team but this group is capable of something special," Njuguna said.
