Fast-rising sprint sensation Isaac Omurwa insists he is grounded in his quest for a successful athletics career even as he seeks to emulate elder brother Ferdinand Omanyala.

Omurwa 18, believes he has what it takes especially after tasting his first international assignment at the East Africa Under 18 championships.

The Alliance High School alumnus captained Team Kenya to the regional championships in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania last week and says he learnt valuable lessons as he now targets the Africa under 18/20 championships set for Lusaka, Zambia from April 19-23.

"I am only getting started in my career. I am not ready for any sideshows that can distract me from reaching dizzying heights. My focus is purely on my athletics career," Omurwa said.

After clocking 10.72 in Tanzania, failing to achieve his 10.5 target, Omurwa says he has put that disappointment behind him as he prepares for upcoming assignments.

"My elder brother Omanyala told me to forget the Tanzanian disappointment and focus on the task ahead. I want to make the team for the continental championships next month," he said.

Omurwa cited the tough weather conditions in Dar as the reason why he did not perform well.

"The temperatures were very high compared to back home but I can't complain. I recorded 10.72 seconds which was way below my expectation. I think I gave my best despite failing to achieve my 10.5 target. However, the experience in Tanzania was nice."

Omurwa will look to impress at the African Youth Championships trials next week.

"I hope for a 10.5 finish during the trials at Nyayo Stadium next week ."
