2021 World Under-20 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi has been nominated for this year’s Men’s Rising Star Award, which will recognise this year's best U20 athlete at the World Athletics Awards.
Wanyonyi, 18, placed fourth in 1:44.54 at the World Championships in Oregon where he was competing with the seniors. He also won the Rabat Diamond League meeting in 1:45.47 earlier this year in June.
Other athletes nominated include Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo who the World U20 100m champion and record holder, USA’s Erriyon Knighton who is the World 200m bronze medallist, Jamaica’s Jaydon Hibbert who is the World U20 triple jump champion and Frenchman Anthony Ammirati who is the World U20 pole vault champion.
The nominations reflect the standout performances that the sport has witnessed this year, at the World Under-20 Championships in Cali, the World Championships in Oregon and other events around the world.
The winner of this year’s Men’s Rising Star Award will be selected by an international panel of experts and be announced on World Athletics’ social media platforms in early December. Further information about the Awards will be announced in the coming weeks.
