Kipyegon nominated for women's World Athlete of the Year

This week marks the opening of the voting process for the World athletes of the year and it will be a three-way process.

In Summary

• Kipyegon won the 1500m race at the World Championships in Oregon, the final of the Diamond League meeting in Zurich and ran a world leading Kenyan record of 3:50.37 (just three second off the world record) at the Monaco Diamond League Meeting.

• Other female athletes selected include Jamaican duo of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, Peru’s Kimberly Garcia, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, USA’s Sydney McLaughlin, Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, USA’s Chase Ealey and Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan.

Two-time world 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon has been nominated for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year.

Kipyegon won the 1,500m race at the World Championships in Oregon (3:52.96) and the final of the Diamond League meeting in Zurich (4:00.44)

Kipyegon ran a world-leading Kenyan record of 3:50.37 (just three seconds off the world record) at the Monaco Diamond League Meeting. She also won the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon in 3:53.23. 

Other athletes selected include the Jamaican duo of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, Peru’s Kimberly Garcia, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, USA’s Sydney McLaughlin, Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, USA’s Chase Ealey and Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan. 

This week marks the opening of the voting process for the World Athletes of the Year and it will be a three-way process.

The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the World Athletics social media platforms.

The individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube this week; a 'like' on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.

The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50 percent of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25 percent of the final result.

Voting for the World Athletes of the Year closes at midnight on Monday, October 31. At the conclusion of the voting process, five women and five men finalists will be announced by World Athletics.

The winners will be revealed on World Athletics’ social media platforms in early December. Further information concerning this year's World Athletics Awards is set to be announced in the coming weeks.
