Chespol fades to 13th place as Kazakhstan's Jeruto bags gold

Kenya's medal drought persisted at the World Athletic Championships as as the best Kenyan in the women's 3000m steeplechase, Celliphine Chespol finished a distant 13th.

Chespol started the race well keeping in touch with the leaders but faded badly to clock a sluggish 9:27.34.

The Kenyan-born Norah Jeruto now representing Kazakhstan bagged gold after controlling the race superbly from the start in a championship record in 8:53.02.

Ethiopia's Werkuha Getachew took silver in 8:54.61 while compatriot Mekides Abebe settled for bronze in 8:56.08.

The Kenyan contingent in the 800m safely made into the semifinals. Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir topped his heat in 1:45.05 ahead of  Morocco's El hassine Moujahed (1:49.27) and Spain's Alvaro De Ariba (1:49.30) who placed second and third respectively.

Commonwealth Games' 800m champion Wycliffe Kinyamal was placed second in his heat after posting 1:45.08. Slimane Mouala of Algeria clocked 1:44.90 to win the heat as Abeelati El Guesse was placed third in 1:45:25.

World Under-20 800 m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi clocked 1:46.45 to finish third in his heat that was won by Morocco's Moad Zahafi in 1:46.15. Gabriel Tual of France came second in 1:46.34. Noah Kibet qualified to the semifinals as one of the fastest losers in 1:45.41.

World 10,000 bronze medalist Margaret Chelimo, Béatrice Chebet and Gloria Kite all qualified for the 5000m final. Chelimo was placed fourth in 14:53.45 as Chebet came third in the heat in 14:53.34  Ethiopia' Gudaf Tsegay won the heat on 14:52.64 as compatriot Dawit Seyaum took second position in 14:53.06. Gloria Kite came sixth in heat 2, clocking 14:53.62.
