Fresh from his exit at Impala RFC, assistant coach Jackson Kalonje has joined Mwamba RFC in the same role.

Mwamba confirmed his arrival on Wednesday through a statement on their X page, describing him as “a proven builder, a winner and a developer of stars.”

“Introducing our new Assistant Coach: Jackson ‘Kalonje’ Katunga. A proven builder. A winner. A developer of stars. Welcome to Mwamba, Coach Kalonje,” the club announced.

Kalonje left Impala last month after just one season at the club.

He had joined the Red Shirts ahead of the 2024/25 campaign alongside head coach Louis Kisia, and the duo made an immediate impact — guiding the team to their first Floodlit final since 2018, where they finished second.

The tactician also stepped up whenever Kisia was away on national duties with the Kenya 7s setup, helping ensure Impala retained their Kenya Cup status by finishing 10th at the end of the season.

He played a significant role in Impala’s return to the National 7s Circuit, where they showed marked improvement to finish 10th with 41 points. Their best performance came at the Christie 7s, where they collected 13 points.

Away from the men’s team, Kalonje also handled the Impala Roans women’s side after the departure of coach Mary Ochieng, overseeing their growth throughout the season.

Mwamba head coach Paul Murunga welcomed the new addition, noting that Kalonje will be instrumental as the club targets a return to the Kenya Cup after last season’s relegation.

“He did an excellent job at Impala and at Strathmore over the past couple of years. Our ambitions are aligned — he is big on developing new talent,” said Murunga.

Mwamba are currently second on the Championship log with 11 points, four behind early leaders Catholic Monks. Murunga added that the club will work on improving their set-pieces during the Christmas and New Year break. “We have some work to do to ensure we are an all-round solid side, and I’m confident that with the tweaks we’ll make, we will be tough to beat when the season resumes in the new year,” he said.
