Harambee Stars' defender Mike Kibwage during a training session/HANDOUTTowering Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars defender Mike Kibwage is buzzing with anticipation as Kenya head to Turkey for international friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal.
For him, the matches, against Equatorial Guinea on November 14 and Senegal four days later, are more than just warm-ups.
“These friendlies are perfect for testing ourselves,” Kibwage said. “Playing against nations like Senegal pushes us. It’s the right challenge before Afcon 2027 and I can’t wait to get on the pitch.”
Drawing from his 2024 Africa Nations Championships experience, Kibwage highlighted the importance of team cohesion. “We’ve played together before, so the understanding is already there. Chemistry is crucial when you face quality opposition. I’m excited to see how we can improve and grow as a team,” he said.
Beyond tactics, the friendlies are a chance to build confidence, trust and adaptability.
“It’s about testing rotations, game management, and response under pressure. Every minute is valuable preparation,” he said.
Kenya’s co-hosting of the 2027 Cup of Nations, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, adds even more significance.
“These matches help us get timing, coordination and mentality right. We want to be competitive from the start and show we can contend with the best in Africa. I’m really looking forward to it.”
At club level, Kibwage has been a cornerstone of Gor Mahia’s defence, starting all seven games this season alongside Sylvester Owino and Byrne Omondi. He credits both the team’s bond and his CHAN experience for strengthening performance.
“We’ve bonded for months, and that shows on the pitch. We know each other’s movements and can anticipate. It’s a big advantage, and I can’t wait to bring that understanding to the national team,” he said.
Kibwage also praised Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor for bringing structure and consistency.
“Charles knows how to get the best out of players. That clarity carries over into the national team, and I’m excited to see it in action during these friendlies,” he added.
For Kibwage, these matches are the first step in building a Harambee Stars team capable of challenging Africa’s best. “The preparation, cohesion, and focus—it’s all coming together. I’m thrilled to be part of it and ready to show what we can do at Afcon 2027,” he concluded.
