Kenya’s Para Badminton coach John Mburu believes they have had sufficient time to prepare for their historic debut at the World Ability Sports Beach Games in Mersin, Turkey, on Wednesday.
“We have prepared well and have a strong group that can challenge for medals,” said Mburu.
Speaking after the team’s final training session, Mburu expressed confidence in his players' unity and adaptability but acknowledged the stiff competition ahead, particularly from the hosts and experienced European sides.
“Some of our players were outstanding at the recent Africa Para-Badminton Championships in Nigeria, but Turkey has world champions in their squad, so we must be sharp from the start,” Mburu added.
He hinted at starting Benson Nduva alongside Mary Nduku, while Caleb Omollo could pair with Elizabeth Nabwire — combinations he believes could help Kenya find early rhythm.
“They have good chemistry, which is important here because the beach surface changes the game dynamics completely,” Mburu noted.
The final fixture list is expected to be released on Wednesday morning.
Among the standout players is Nicholas Keiyo, who also captains the national amputee football team and plays professionally with Adana Demirspor in Turkey.
“Having lived here for five years, I understand the conditions and culture,” said Keiyo. “That familiarity will help the team settle quickly. We’re here to compete and make Kenya proud.”
Also in the squad is Ashley Autai, who joined the team late due to personal commitments; debutant Newton Gatobu, Japheth Kakai, Petronila Muhani, Bonface Were, Patrick Mwema, Martin Gikonyo and the experienced Elizabeth Nabwire.
Team manager and Ability Sports Kenya vice president Alfred Simiyu said the players were in high spirits and determined to leave their mark.
“This is a proud moment for Kenya,” Barasa said. “We are confident of coming back home with medals and setting the tone for future participation in global events.”
