Newly appointed Kenya Police Bullets newly appointed headcoach David Vijago with Lorna Nyabuto/ HANDOUT
Newly appointed Kenya Police Bullets head coach David Vijago has set his sights on lifting the reigning FKF Women’s Premier League champions beyond domestic success.
He said he is targeting CECAFA glory and qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
“I think I’m the right person to take the team to the next level. My track record speaks for itself. The main target, as the Police, is to feature in CECAFA, and we will try our best,” Vijago said.
“I don’t want us to just win matches, but to win them by playing quality football. I may become the first coach to win both the league and the Cup, and I believe we can achieve that together,” he added.
The tactician arrives from Kibera Soccer Women, whom he guided to their maiden FKF Women’s Cup triumph earlier this year and steps into the shoes of Harambee Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba, who left Police last week after back-to-back league titles.
His unveiling came on Wednesday, at the Police Sacco Grounds shortly after the Police’s barren draw with Ulinzi Stars in a Premier League fixture.
“Joining champions is no walk in the park, and you need to be yourself. The players I’ve found here are good, and we started training on Monday. For now, it’s about understanding their philosophy and sharing my expectations. I’m sure you’ll see change and good results,” Vijago added.
He noted that some of the Bullets players had previously worked under him at Kibera, and he said this would ease the transition. Among the standout arrivals is Medina Hussein Abubakar, a midfielder who has also featured for Harambee Starlets, joining Police after her impressive displays at Kibera.
She is joined by Mercy Mwachi, who strengthens the defensive line with her composure at the back and Quinter Seduda Adhiambo, a forward who adds depth in attack.
Vijago, who also serves as Kenya U17 Women assistant coach, said he is now tasked with stamping his identity on the Bullets, balancing winning results with the promise of a possession-driven, youth-conscious philosophy to lift Police onto the continental stage.
Police Bullets' Secretary General Chris Oguso hailed the appointment, saying Vijago’s qualities and achievements made him the natural successor.
“Vijago is a good addition to our team, even as we target going to greater heights. He is a coach we have followed for a while and seen his success with Kibera Soccer Women. He even performed well against us, and, as is the nature of football, we had to assert our status by signing the best,” said Oguso.
Oguso confirmed that the Police’s ambitions are now firmly continental.
“We have won the league twice, and we are now aiming to take the team to the next level, which is to win CECAFA and later qualify for the Champions League. We believe he is the right person for the job,” he said.
Kenya Police Bullets will play an away match at Utalii Grounds against the newly promoted Kayole Starlets this Saturday.
Coming off the 2024/25 season, Bullets defended their FKF Women’s Premier League title.
They were crowned champions after a 4-0 win over Trinity Starlets in Nakuru, finishing with 46 points.
They edged out Ulinzi Starlets, who finished second on 44 points.
Bullets also produced standout performances across the season, including tight wins like the 1-0 result at Bungoma Queens that brought them close to sealing their title.
