The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has unveiled a 12-man U-20 Sevens training squad identified during the National Sevens Circuit.
KRU Director of Rugby Paul Odera said the selection mirrors the federation's structured performance pathway aimed at nurturing future national team players.
Among the standout names are Nahashon Mwangemi, Amon Bwambok, Mike Lukusi and Kevin Ochieng—all tipped as the next generation of Kenyan sevens stars.
Odera described the move as a landmark step for the Union and the players.
“It’s a huge step forward. At the just-concluded circuit, we saw a talented crop of players emerging at the under-20 level. We want to upskill them with the help of our coaches and guide them as they transition into the Shujaa and Morans squads,” he said.
Odera, a former Kenya Simbas and U-20 coach, said the squad will undergo intensive training and mentorship to prepare them for higher levels of the game. The selection, he added, strengthens KRU’s youth development pipeline, ensuring Kenya maintains a competitive edge regionally and internationally.
“We want to make sure Kenya is well-positioned in Africa and globally as these players begin to meet their peers in upcoming tournaments,” he added.
The last Kenya U-20 Sevens squad was assembled in 2021 for the Safari Sevens.
That team included Amon Wamalwa, David Williams and Lucky Ishimwe—players who later helped Kenya Harlequin win the 2024 National Sevens Circuit. Others were Tyson Maina, now a Kenya Simbas player, and Brian Odengo, who has played for Kenya 7s and the Morans.
The new U-20 Sevens squad includes Wilson Otieno, Chris Obuya and Vincent Omuroka from Daystar University, Lukusi and Rayvonne Ambale from Kabras, Bwambok and Davis Nyangige from Impala, Brian Achacha from Menengai Oilers, Ochieng from KCB, Javan Otieno from Nakuru, Denis Ndayala from Mwamba and Mwangemi from MSC.
