Kakamega County is ready to host the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two national games and the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) championships.

KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi on Wednesday said they expect all the facilities to be in place by July 30.

The national Term Two games are due July 26 through August 3, while the FEASSA extravaganza is scheduled for August 14-26.

Speaking after an extensive inspection of facilities in Kakamega town, Ngugi said: “We were impressed by the playing and accommodation facilities for the two events.”

He, however, noted that the works at Bukhungu Stadium, which is scheduled to host the opening and closing ceremonies, were behind schedule.

“The contractor assured us that they will complete the laying of the artificial turf by July 30 since this facility will host the girls’ and boys’ football finals,” added Ngugi.

Other facilities which are undergoing upgrading are the Police Canteen, which will host basketball and the swimming pool at Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology.

“The 25m swimming pool at St Peter’s Mumias Primary is complete, but at MMUST, they are racing against time to complete a 50m one,” noted Ngugi.

The boys will be accommodated at MMUST while the girls will be at Mukumu Girls’. MMUST will also host the national and FEASSA secretariats alongside indoor games and netball competitions.

Bukhungu Stadium, Mumias Sports Complex, Kakamega High School and Mukumu Boys’ will host football, while the Bull Ring will stage rugby 7s and 15s contests.

“The upgrading works at the Police Canteen are almost done. We are satisfied with the progress. The contractor assured us that the works will be completed on time,” noted Ngugi.

“I also want to commend the Kakamega County government for the good work they have done in upgrading the lawn tennis court at Kakamega High School.”

Meanwhile, FEASSA is introducing cricket, beach football, beach volleyball, scrabble and chess at this year’s event. Kenya will seek to wrestle the overall title from Uganda.
