The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) have revised the format for the 2025 Prescott Cup, set for Thursday through Saturday at RFUEA grounds in Nairobi.

Top-seeded teams from each region will now square off in the semifinals as the federation sought to give teams a 24-hour recovery window after each match.

The union said the move aims at prioritising player welfare, offering teams adequate rest between matches.

Rift Valley Academy will open proceedings against Kisii School, while Waa High School will square off with St. Patrick’s Iten in the second semi-final. Kisii School coach Edwin Morara expressed his disappointment at last-minute changes to the playing format.

“We were set to play three games from quarterfinals to finals to prepare our team for the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games,” he said. He, however, added that they are ready to face Rift Valley Academy in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, a parallel contest, the Father Caffrey Memorial Trophy, will feature second-seed teams from the regional finals, where Lenana School will take on Kabianga as Alliance High School battle former national 15s powerhouses Butula Boys in the semis.

The girls’ category has equally thrilling semifinal matchups. The 2024 national secondary schools 7s runners-up, Kinale Girls’ from the Central region, will take on Nyanza’s Mawego Girls, while St. Teresa’s Girls from Eastern will clash with Coast’s Paul Harris.

In addition to the on-field action, all participating teams will benefit from special training sessions on Friday. These will be conducted by high-performance coaches from the national teams, offering invaluable technical guidance and elite-level exposure to the budding athletes.

All the three finals, the Prescott Cup, the Father Caffrey Memorial Trophy and the girls’ competition, will be held on Saturday.
