The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Masters tournament, scheduled for June 14–15 at Mombasa Sports Club, has attracted 11 teams.

The event, which is the second leg of the Masters series, will feature Kisumu Veterans, Wazalendo Veterans, Kisumu Masters Field, Blue Oceans Chiefs, Sikh Union Veterans, Nakuru Masters, Parkroad Lions, Greensharks Masters, Impala Vetos, Goan Institute and Western.

The tournament is part of a growing series organised by the KHU to promote masters hockey across the country and increase participation for both men and women.

KHU Mombasa County fixtures secretary, Nobert Sije, said preparations for the event have been finalised and everything is in place for a competitive weekend of hockey.

“The stage is set for the competition, and there will be trophies up for grabs," he added. Series One, staged by KHU Kakamega County, was held on April 5–6 in Kakamega.

KHU match and fixtures Secretary Jane Nyamogo said the tournament is being played on a series basis across several counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru.

“This is a Masters Series that seeks to keep veteran players engaged in the sport while also encouraging more women to join,” she said, noting that the format requires at least five women per team and a minimum of three female players per match.

“This is important for inclusion. We want to see women more involved in the sport even after their peak playing years,” she added.

She said Kenya has already begun showing signs of growth on the international stage.

“Last year, a team of nine women and 19 men represented the country at the World Masters Hockey tournament in South Africa."

The tournament rotates host cities to ensure more regional representation and fan engagement, with Series Three expected to head to Kisumu later in the year.
