The two teams had already booked slots in the 2025/26 KRU Championship, and the game, which was played at NYS Headquarters in Ruaraka, Nairobi, was all about bragging rights.

Kisii RFC and NYS Spades will replace the University of Eldoret’s Trojans and Technical University of Mombasa Marines, who were relegated to the third-tier league.

Kisii RFC are back in the KRU Championship six years after they were relegated. NYS Spades coach Martin Munga said they had a slow start.

“We didn’t have a good start, and by the time we were gaining momentum, Kisii were already ahead. We chased the game and went ahead, but Kisii beat us because of experience,” said Munga.

He added: “It was a tough game which lived up to our expectations as a final.”

He said he will now give his charges a couple of weeks to rejuvenate before they start their Sevens circuit pre-season.

Kisii’s longest-serving player, Frank Ondiere aka Zapper, said: “It was one of the toughest games we have played in the KRU Championship. It’s a game which would have gone either way. Both teams wanted the trophy, but we wanted it more,” said Ondiere.
