Willy Mwangi is keen to retain the final leg of the Africa Scrabble Championships (ASC) this weekend in Bondo, Siaya County.

The Scrabble Kenya series qualifiers have already been staged in Nairobi, Bungoma, Homabay, Murang’a and Eldoret,

Mwangi said as much as he is not in the ASC team after skipping other qualifiers, he will be hoping to defend the title he won last year.

The two-day action starting on Saturday will mark the end of a five-leg qualification thriller, where the winner will earn a point.

“I want to go and defend my title in Bondo. Since I have not been playing in other qualifiers, I am technically out of the team unless I am given a wild card,” said Mwangi.

The top players from the qualifiers will represent the country at the Africa show to be staged in Freetown, Sierra Leone from September 23-27.

With the pressure of defending the title mounting, Mwangi said he has been training with veteran players—Richard Macharia, Bernard Nderitu, Charles Nderitu, Chris Okioma and David Mbugia among in Nakuru.

“We have a very strong team here in Nakuru and we have perfected our art properly ahead of the show. After the Bondo event, I hope to return in the game full swing,” he added.

Last year, Mwangi emerged victorious after a four-year hiatus, winning 14 out of 18 games.
