Women basketball champions Zetech University stormed into the quarterfinals on Day One of the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Games at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega County.

Maurice Obilo-coached side won their opening Pool 'A' matches to reach the quarter-final with a game to play. Zetech play in Division Two of the Kenya Basketball Federation.

As the defending champions, Obilo said they had to pick their second team to defend the title that their senior team won last year in Eldoret after beating Strathmore 48-21 at the finals.

“We settled for the young Division Two team as part of our plan to develop them and instil confidence into the squad. This is their time to showcase their talent on the court,” said Obilo.

He added: “This is the best platform they have been given to cut their niche and defend the title. However, as much as we are ready to defend our title, we can also lose because all the teams are itching to beat us.”

In their opening match, they humiliated newcomers Taita Taveta University (TTU) 72-16 (29-02, 16-04, 11-0 and 16-0) before silencing the home team 66-04 (26-02, 13-06, 10-04 and 17-04).

In women's football, hosts MMUST have already qualified for the quarterfinals after winning their opening matches.

MMUST capitalised on home advantage to thrash Meru University 5-0 before toiling to a solitary goal win against Moi University.
