The National Police Service has outlined alternative routes to ease traffic congestion during the WRC Safari Rally Kenya on March 28-31.

Deputy Traffic Commandant of Police Gifinalis Baraza said police will be deployed on the route to ensure traffic flow.

Police anticipate a lot of activities on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway by rally, pedestrian and passenger traffic.

He said: “Police officers will be deployed along the entire route to ensure the safety of participants and road users from March 29 to April 1 April. Parking lorries and trucks by the roadside, especially at Mai Mahiu and Kikopey will not be allowed. Alternate parking will be provided.”

Motorists headed towards Nyanza and Western are advised to use the Narok route through Mai Mahiu.

He added: “Motorists heading towards Nakuru from Central Kenya are advised to divert at Thika and proceed via the Safaricom Foundation route through to Olakalau, Njambini and Lanet.”

“There will be no overlapping along the Nairobi -Naivasha/Nakuru road from March 27 and the Mai Mahiu route to April 1.”

There will be limited use of side roads “and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.”

Officers will be deployed all over the route to ensure traffic flow during the rally.

Access to Service at the Wildlife Institute will be reserved for rally drivers and other authorized persons with entry passes.

“Those who go against traffic rules will be dealt with according to the law. No vendors will operate within the road from the T-junction to Naivasha to Hell’s Gate. There will be signage to direct spectators along the rally routes and directions to various spectator spots,” he expounded.

“As we celebrate this special event in the sports calendar, I urge that we exercise caution and ensure that the event is accident-free.”
