Madira Soccer Assassins head coach Francis Muhambe believes their 1-0 win over Gaspo Women will be crucial in their fight to avoid the Women's Premier League axe.

Charity Midewa scored on the stroke of halftime as Madira shut out the visitors at Mumboha Grounds on Sunday.

“We were in a bad position as a team. We needed to up our game to ensure we are out of the danger zone,” said Muhambe.

“We need all the points to maintain our WPL status."

The win propelled Madira to sixth on the standings with 11 points from 10 matches, 13 points behind leaders and champions Vihiga Queens.

Kenya Police Bullets are second with 19 points while Ulinzi Starlets and Kibera Ladies follow with 18 each but Ulinzi have a healthier goal difference.

Meanwhile, Gaspo are 11th on the 12-team table with Trans Nzoia already axed after missing three consecutive fixtures.

Gaspo coach James Ombeng attributed their current woes to the departure of important players.

“When the 2023/2024 season started, we lost many players. We are rebuilding but we are certain of disentangling ourselves," Ombeng said.

“We will start the second leg fixtures against Bunyore Starlets at Mumboha and we are expecting a good result."
