My dream career as a young girl was to be a journalist – CS Miano

Miano said that just like any other Kenyan, she climbed the success ladder step by step

Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has opened up on her career journey.

Speaking during an interview on KTN News, Miano said her initial dream as a young girl was to be a journalist even though she ended up pursuing a different career.

Miano said that just like any other Kenyan, she climbed the success ladder step by step, following the career ladder from an entry level job to where she is as a Cabinet Secretary.

“When I was choosing my career when I was a young girl after finishing school my dream career was to be a journalist, not guided by anything much but the desire to appear on TV,” Miano said.

“But then things changed, I went to university, studied law, finished and started what you call a bottom up journey to a staircase career.” 

After finishing her school Miano revealed that she was employed at entry level in the energy sector as a legal assistant, a job she did diligently.

She then served through the ranks in various job grades to the top where she served as a the company secretary and legal affairs director for 11 years before being appointed at the company’s Chief Operating Officer.

“Before I became CEO I was company secretary, legal affairs director for 11 years and there I really specialized in many things and especially governance, legal advisory and business,” she said.

“I almost became a business expert in addition to very good appreciation of engineering because I was in the energy sector and so I have had quite a good career.” 

It was while she was serving as the CEO that she got nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for East Africa Community, Asals and regional development before being moved to the current docket as the CS investments and trade.

The Cabinet reshuffle was done by President William Ruto in October.

CS Moses Kuria who was holding the trade docket then was moved to the Ministry of Public Service while the EAC and Asals previously held by Miano was taken over by Peninah Malonza.
