Kenya Prisons men's volleyball coach Denis Mokua has credited their perfect start to the Kenya Volleyball Federation League season to proper pre-season.

The Warders have won the opening three matches of the season and top the KVF league standings.

"I think our preparations from the start were better and the players are focussed," Mokua, who took over reigns from David Lung'aho at the start of the 2023-24 season said.

Prisons beat Rift Valley Prisons 3-0 in their opening match, and annihilated Kenya Defence Forces 3-1 before a dramatic 3-2 action-packed victory against Equity Bank.

Prisons are the league-defending champions after their thrilling 3-2 victory over perennial rivals the General Service Unit courtesy of a (25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 28-30, 15-10) set win.

It was also Prisons' first league title in six years, cutting short GSU dominance.

"The boys have risen against all odds. We intend to put our best foot forward to successfully defend our title," Mokua added.

Mokua has been with Kenya Prisons since 2016. Having served as Lung'aho's assistant, and garnered enough experience under his belt, he believes the team is back to where it belongs.

He, however, said he feels no pressure at all, calling for the boys to remain grounded.

"I have been with the team for a while. I have no pressure at all. We just need to maintain consistency and build the chemistry among the players," the tactician observed.

The team returns to training on Wednesday after their exploits in the Heroes tournament held in Mosoriot over the weekend.

"We are not at the level we want to be as a team. Backcourt defence is wanting while our services must improve," Mokua said.
