Sharks rip Rangers apart to go top of KHF league standings

Ulinzi Sharks ripped Rangers apart in a 43-21 demolition in a Kenya Handball Federation women’s league match at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The win helped the unbeaten soldiers leapfrog champions Nairobi Water Queens to the top of the log with 14 points from seven games. Queens, also unbeaten, have 12 from six games.

Sarah Wasike connected for 14 goals, Caren Lutengeya and Sharon Mulei shot eight each and Euphrasia Mukasia hit seven. Belinda Mulongo tallied nine and Peris Musumba six for the losers.

Rangers, who won three out of four games,  had earlier hammered New Hope 50-11 behind 14 goals from Caren Masinde and nine from  Musumba. Hope had six from Timminah Barasa.

The Bungoma-based side made a strong start to the season with a 30-22 victory over Kenyatta University on Saturday.  They also thumped Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) 33-13.

Boomerang defeated Technical University of Kenya (TUK) 45-33. The winners had a 25-18 halftime lead. Austin Ochieng shot 13 goals and Joshua Onyango added six in that win. Allan Ombati had 10 and Polycarp Rakama eight for Tuk.

“We really wanted to win since losing to UoE last week. But we were terrible in defence and blunt in attack. We are going back to the drawing board to fix the issues we have. We’ve only won once in four fixtures,” Tuk coach Lawrence Wafula said.

Boomerang lost their second game of the day, going down 37-23 to Strathmore University — who led 19-13 at the breather.  They also fell 34-30 to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat).

Eshiton Situma grabbed seven goals while Moses Odhiambo had six. Onyango scored five for Boomerand as Josephat Menel and Kevin Manoro hit four each.

Saturday matches saw champions National Cereals and Produce Board punish Young City 51-15. Captain Timothy Kirimi, Morgan Simiyu and William Malui connected for seven goals each.

Equity Bank thrashed Kenyatta University 42-18 while Hunters stopped Spartan 35-34 in a closely fought game.
