Equity Bank coach Peter Mwathi is excited about his sides' two weekend wins that saw them shoot to the top of the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) league table.

The bankers thrashed debutant Nanyuki 40-14 in an easy encounter at Nyayo Stadium Sunday and coach Mwathi says there is no looking back.

“Two wins this weekend is very good for me. They take us to the top of the table,” said veteran coach Mwathi, who is taking charge of the bankers in their first season on the topflight.

“Our strategy worked well in today’s match... not allowing our opponent to score more than 15 goals. My boys used every available opportunity to get as many goals as possible,” he said.

Brian Muranguri led the scoring tally with eight goals, Kevin Obigha had six while Kevin Mwangi and Simon Mutuku had five each for Equity, up 22-10 at halftime. The losers had five from Samuel Krop.

Another title contender, Ulinzi also went on the rampage, blanking Hunters 54-13 in another one-sided demolition. The soldiers got off to a roaring start, built a huge 29-2 advantage, and never looked back.

Captain and defensive ace Mussa Ndombi noted: “We had a very good first half and piled on the goals but the second half was not as good. Maybe we underrated the young opponents. This season will be tighter than it has been over the years.”

Daystar University had a game-high 13 goals from Baladonner Aruna, six from Damaris Ilebun, and four from Lavinda Nekesa as they defeated New Hope 30-21. They led 16-9 at halftime.

The losers were led by Timminah Barasa, who scored six goals, while Phoebe Simiyu and Peris Okumu had five and four respectively.
