The Pearl Bikers Africa and the Uganda Bikers Association have entered 20 bikes for this year’s edition of Africa Concours d’Elegance scheduled for September 24 at the Nairobi Racecourse.

Regular competitors in the Pearl Bikers team include Gianfranco Masetto on his massive BMW R1200 GSA and Enzo Amato on a Honda Gold Wing, which resembles a car on two wheels.

The Uganda Bikers Association squad will be riding massive touring and trail bikes and have the only lady biker in the competition, Angela Ssemukutu on a 2013 Suzuki GSXR1000.

Newcomers on the UBA list include Deogratious Atukwase on a 2017 Honda and Ralph Othembo on his 2012 Kawasaki.

While the motorcycle entry list is dominated by bikers from Uganda, Kenyan-based enthusiasts are busy preparing eye-catching machines.

These include the 1983 Honda Goldwing of Doc Badman Classics — which has a side car attached to it — as well the 1952 Ducati of Russell Hughes and Dominique Antoine’s 1976 Bultaco Sherpa T250.

The oldest entry from Tanzania is the 1953 Land Rover of Tor Allan, who will be up against several other ancient Land Rovers including the 1949 model of Petra Somen and the 1965 Series 11A of Reid Arensen.

The most eye-catching entry from Tanzania is the 1990 Lancia Delta Intergrale of Navraaj Singh Hans, who will be contesting the Concours for the first time in the rally car category.

Volkswagen will be strongly represented by Beetle and Kombi models entered by Kenyan car enthusiasts. Christine Omuombo’s 1967 Beetle will rival Stephen Warui — who is preparing a 1961 Beetle — and Paul Chemngorem in his 1956 VW Beetle.

The Kombis include the 1971 model of Wolfgang Amadeus Omondi. And for the third year running, the students at Rift Valley Technical Training Institute are preparing a 1970 Volkswagen pick-up under the guidance of the staff.

The pick-up was purchased while new for delivery and collection of supplies.
