Kenya’s football team edged out Libya 11-8 on Wednesday to revive hopes of a medal at the ongoing Africa Beach Games in Hammamet, Tunisia.

The victory, coupled with Tanzania’s 8-1 loss at the hands of Senegal in the other match, means Kenya can battle for the bronze medal when they take on Morocco on Thursday.

Skipper Paul Kavula said a tactical change was necessary for the team to record a victory against Libya.

" In the first two games, we were too defensive. Today we decided to have more offensive players and put a balance. This strategy worked tremendously as we won the tie. We will use the same strategy against Morocco and hopefully, it will work," said Kavula.

Lucky Mrabu and Wilberforce Lugogo starred for Team Kenya with Mrabu netting five goals and Lugogo three.

Ahead of the tie with Morocco, Kavula said they will give their all in that duel to raise the chances of a podium finish.

“We know it is going to be a difficult match. They are very experienced, but we are experienced as well. We have been growing from the first game and we have really improved after three matches,” he said.

Kenya were hammered 12-1 by Senegal in the opening match before losing 5-3 to neighbours Tanzania in the second game.

Elsewhere, the men's and women’s basketball teams had a losing start in the tournament.

The men's side was handed a 21-9 thrashing by Algeria in their first match while the ladies suffered a 21-14 defeat to Mali.

The basketball competition in Hammamet involves only players in the U-23 age category.
