KDF Ulinzi and Nairobi Water Queens were yesterday crowned 2022 Super Cup men and women champions at Nyayo National Stadium.
KDF dethroned National Cereals and Produce 37-35 to lift the trophy in an energy-sapping clash that was deadlocked 27-27 in regulation time and 31-31 in extra time.
Nairobi Water Queens on the other hand suffocated NCPB 30-20 in the ladies' final game played earlier to retain their crown. The NCPB-KDF was a tough encounter. The soldiers raced away to an early 7-2 advantage after both sides had tied 1-1 and 2-2.
But the unperturbed NCPB dug deep to storm right back into contention and took a halftime lead.
After intermission, again it was KDF who took the initiative but midway through the deciding half, NCPB was up 18-15.
NCPB took a 26-23 lead later in the game and it looked like they would seal but the gritty soldiers came right back to lock it 27-27 and send the tie into overtime.
"We have waited a long time for this. It was all about endurance and had ample time to train for this and it showed." Said KDF coach Nickson Oyaro.
"All my players followed the instructions and I thank my goalkeeper for a job well done. As the last defender, he did his job well," he added.
Frank Kiplagat and Nicholas Ureri sunk six goals each while Philip Isutswa, Noah Cheruiyot, Gideon Mulwa and Moses Ndombi had Five each for KDF.
NCPB had eight from skipper Timothy Kirimi, Theodosia Sangoro and Robert Mwanga had six each and Brian Wekukha had five.
Water Queens sailed off to an 8-2 start and managed to build that with a five-goal cushion of 15-10 as the two giants went to the break.
Water Queens inspirational captain Gladys Chilo topped the scoring tally with 10 goals to her credit.
Melvin Akinyi scored four goals while Cecilia Katheu, Mitchell Adhiambo and Brenda Musambai each tallied three goals for the winners.
Naomi Munyore 10, Joan Akinyi made five and Sarah Mabonga managed four for the losers.
