Para teams promised support ahead of Africa and Olympic Games

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has promised to support the Kenya Para Volleyball team ahead of the Africa Para Games set for September in Accra, Ghana, and next year's Paralympic Games in Paris, France. 

Namwamba said he will make sure funds are available to secure the team’s preparations for the championships.

“I want to congratulate all the Para-volley players who participated in Para Volleyball national trials over the weekend.

"You have elevated the status of this game and you have started the long journey to the Olympics next year.

"I want to recognize the leadership of the Uasin Gishu County government through the sports department headed by Lucy Ngendo Njoroge as well as Para Volley leadership for hosting the games,” said Namwamba on the phone.

Eldoret hosted a three-day event, where 48 players — 24 men and women— were named to represent the country at the Africa Para Games between September 3-12 in Accra, Ghana.

“To the Uasin Gishu team congratulations for winning the men’s title and indeed Eldoret is the city of champions and Nairobi for winning the women’s team.

"As you feature in the qualifiers in Accra and Egypt respectively, I believe you will qualify for the Para Olympics next year in Paris. I want to assure you that we shall support you in all endeavours,” promised Namwamba.

During the three-day championships, Uasin Gishu County defeated Nairobi to win the men’s title while Nairobi beat Uasin Gishu to lift the women's crown.

Namwamba said: “The ministry wants to uplift all sports disciplines in the country and para volleyball will no doubt be among them." 

The national trials attracted 25 teams from 17 counties.
