Kenya's Robert Macligeyo and Joyce Nyaruai will represent the country in this year's Africa Individual Chess Championship starting on Saturday in Cairo, Egypt.

The two were winners of the final phase of the national team selection. Macligeyo is positioning himself to become the first Kenyan International Master and later Grandmaster.

The under-18 junior demonstrated his commitment by breaking into the national team twice at the age of 16 and also became the highest-rated player in the country.

Nyaruai, on the other hand, will be seeking to gain a  World Cup slot. She is bracing up for revenge against the Wafa WGM sisters who had a field day during Kenya Open held last month in Nairobi.

The tournament, which has attracted players from 24 African nations, is a World Cup qualifier for both men and women and will end on May 14.

FIDE granted four slots to Africa and one has already been taken up by Egyptian star Grandmaster Amin Bassem who is in the top 100.

Three slots are yet to be filled. The World Cup is scheduled to take place from July 29 to August 25 in Azerbaijan.
