United States International University (USIU) coach George Mayienga is determined to return the teams back to the Kenya top tier leagues.

The 'Tigers' and 'Flames' as the varsity men's and women's teams are fondly referred to, are on the right course as they lead Division One.

"My main plan is to return them back to the Premier League and as you can see, the top varsity teams are there minus USIU," noted Mayienga.

He went on: "For the ladies, we do have a big chance because we only have one player who is graduating so our chances are higher."

The tactician, who also handles the Kenya Lioness side led "Flames" to two back-to-back national titles in 2014 and 2015.

Mayienga is confident the team that also became the first university side to achieve that feat, belongs to the top.

He said as compared to the ladies' side, the men's side have five players who will graduate this year. Both teams are currently leading the Kenya National Basketball Federation League (KNBL) Division One table.

The Tigers top the 12-team table with 19 points from 10 games. The unbeaten Flames lead the ladies with 20 points from ten games.

The men's team have a game away to Shoot 4Life in Eldoret this weekend while the ladies will be engaged in varsity games.

Kenya Defence Forces, Snipers and Moi Air Base (MAB) have mounted a good charge and are trailing USIU in second and third place respectively.

In the women's category, hot on the USIU trail are Strathmore University Swords and Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) in that order.
