Term two school games resume as schools re-open

The games were postponed two weeks ago following the abrupt closure of schools by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha to pave way for the August 9 general elections.

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two games resume next week following the re-opening of schools on Thursday.

The games were postponed two weeks ago following the abrupt closure of schools by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha to pave way for the August 9 general elections.

On Friday, Nyanza Secondary Schools Sports Association secretary Thomas Odhiambo said counties have until August 27 to conclude their championships.

“Following consultations with the office of the Regional Director of Education, it has been agreed that all counties hold their games by August 27,” said Odhiambo in a statement.

He added that the Nyanza regional swimming gala will be held on August 28 at Aga Khan Primary School in Kisumu while the regional championships will be staged at Homa Bay High School and Asumbi Teachers Training College from August 31 to September 3.

The games will be used to select a team to represent the region at the national championships to be held in Nakuru between September 8 and 13.

Here, a team will be selected to represent the country at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games set for Arusha, Tanzania between September 14 and 24.

In Kisumu, the county championships will be held at Maseno School from August 24 to 27, according to secretary George Osura while in Homa Bay, Asumbi TTC will stage the games on the same dates, said secretary George Onyango.

Migori County games will be held at Kanyawanga and Kangeso secondary schools while Nyambaria School will be the venue for the Nyamira games.

In Kisii, Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho and Kisii School will host the games.

Nduru Boys is expected to dominate the Kisii County games having won most titles during the Gucha South Sub County championships while Nyanchwa Boys will go for a fourth consecutive boys’ basketball title.

Nduru Boys bagged football, volleyball, hockey and basketball titles, only losing the handball final to former Kisii County champions Tabaka Boys.

In rugby 7’s, Nduru, Boys coached by the principal J.J Masime, outclassed perennial rivals St Joseph’s Nyabigena 48-10 in the final. Nduru will now face usual suspects Kisii School and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho in the battle for the county title.

Nduru defeated Nyagichenche 4-1 to retain the football title. In hockey, Nduru narrowly defeated Nyabigena 2-1 to bag the title while in handball, Tabaka defeated Nduru 21-20 in an epic final.

Nduru beat Nyabigena 43-16 to win the boys’ basketball title. Riosiri Girls will represent the Sub County at the county level in basketball and netball while county champions Amaiko Girls will seek to defend their title.

Ramoya Girls will carry the handball flag at the county championships.
