Team Kenya captain Daniel Machanje is confident of leading the country to another title during the East, Central, and Southern Africa Scrabble (ECASA) Championships set for the Easter Holiday in Jinja, Uganda.
With the regional championships returning after the coronavirus pandemic, Machanje is optimistic they will carry the day at the event to run on April 15 and 16.
“We have the best team this year and we hope to defend our title. We know Uganda are a potential threat but we will showcase our skills to the maximum,” said Machanje.
He said it is an honour for him to be given the mandate to lead the team.
“I know scrabble is an individual game but with the leadership that has been installed upon me, I will ensure we do our best to enhance teamwork.
" We have performed well in the past tournaments and I don't expect this to be any different,” added Machanje.
Scrabble Kenya have already named a strong team of 26 players to represent the country at the regional championships with Machanje taking the leading role for the first time.
Those in the team are —Michael Gongolo, Allan Oyende, Tobias Outi, David Kimani, Martin Mutahi, Stanley Njoroge, Bernard Koyyoko, Onani Magwanga, Muema Muumbi, and Ayub Zande.
Others are —Tom Mboya, Patrick Miriti, Tarus Kipruto, Richard Okech, Andrew Wabwire, Fred Magu, Joseph Chavutia, Chrispine Kennedy, Paul Mathuu, Powell Kiplagat, Nicole Achan, Manase Otieno, and Kipkemboi Limo.
Scrabble Kenya chairman Bernard Amuke will lead the reserve team of Joel Birgen, Paul Bosita, Hillary Bushienei, and Irungu Wamucii.
