The annual World Aids Day Marathon will be staged on December 1 in Kisumu City.

Athletics Kenya Nyanza North chairman Joseph Ochieng said the event will start and finish at the National Museums of Kenya and not the traditional Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground, which is being rehabilitated.

The event was not held last year following the suspension of sports activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m happy to announce that the event is on and preparations have begun. The course remains the same in Milimani Estate. The only adjustment is the start and finishing point. This is a very flat and fast course,” said Ochieng.

Ochieng said the main events will be the 42km race, half marathon and 21km mixed relay which will see three athletes run 5km each and one 6km.

For the first time, race founder Richard Brodsky will not attend the event. “It is very disappointing that Brodsky will not be here this time due to travel issues. However, I’m still hopeful that he can make it,” Ochieng added.

Meanwhile, Ochieng announced that the annual Rachuonyo 10km race will be held in January even though they are yet to settle on a date.

At the same time, Ochieng appealed to the Kisumu County Government to complete works at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu in readiness for the second Athletics Kenya track and field weekend meeting on February 19 and 20.

“My biggest concern is the track. The county has not started laying the tartan track despite putting cement on the track. The stadium is also in a bad shape after the county moved a market to the stadium’s parking lot,” said Ochieng.
