Strathmore stun champs USIU in varsities League

STRATHMORE University stunned national champions United States International University 48-45 in a top Kenya University basketball league match at the latter’s backyard.

The huge win, a morale booster to Ronny Owino’s charges ahead of the looming play-offs, saw the “Swords” keep their 15-match winning streak alive. They have amassed a maximum 30 points in the 16-team set up. Led by live wire Susan Manya, who poured in a game high of 18 points and Lubira Inziani, who added 11, ‘Strath’ also had sterling performance from Sarah Wanjiku, Samba Babra and Bella Auma. The ‘Flames’ had 14 from Melissa Akinyi.

“The girls really played so well against the national champions. This win is a morale booster to the team ahead of the play offs coming in the next few weeks. We hope to take it on from there,” a beaming Owino said.

Strathmore, who had earlier whipped Kenyatta University Ruiru Campus 52-2 in a one-sided game, will take the pole position during the varsity play-off games quarter and semi-finals t slated for Thika’s Gretsa University in the next two weeks.

The top two teams from the Thika festival will then travel to Eldoret the following week for the finals against teams from other conferences. The winners will be crowned national university champions.

In other matches played at the same venue, Zetech University beat Daystar University Falcons 37-27. Zetech University won 62-43 over Mt Kenya University while St. Paul’s University hit Catholic University of Eastern Africa 41-27.
