Kenyans post mixed results in FASU athletics meet

GHANA won the men’s 4 x 100m race during the ongoing Federation of Africa University Sports (FUSA) Games at the Nyayo Stadium, yesterday.

The Ghanaian team comprising Martin Antwi, Emmanuel Appiah, Desmond Aryee and Eric Goloe clocked 40.5 to relegated hosts Kenya to the second place in 41.6. Senegal came in third in a time of 42.6 while Uganda finished fourth in 44.6.

“In the last games staged in Namibia, we (Ghana) won gold medal in the 100m and 200m but did not feature in the 4x100,” the Ghana team captain Goloe said.

He said they have been training in the 4x100m since the last games and he is happy their effort had paid off. In the women’s category, the race only attracted two countries—South Africa and Kenya— with the former carrying the day. South Africa won in the time of 53.3 secs with Kenya in toe timed at 55.2 secs. In the 100m race, Ghana’s Emmanuel Appiah emerged top in 10.3secs ahead of Senegal’s Manlaye Sonko (10.7sec) and Desmond Aryee (10.8), who finished second and third respectively. Dennis Otieno of Kenya placed fourth in 10.9 secs.

South Africa’s Bevin Smith won the women’s 100m race in 12.0 secs and was followed by Cameroon’s Abessolo Bivina (12.2) and Uganda’s Mary Unyuthfera (12.5). Ghanaian Dorcas Nimako came in 12.7. Bruce Michael of Ghana recorded 15.48 to win triple jump. David Ongome of Uganda was second after covering 14.80m while Marcel Mayaki of Cameroon finished third in 14.76.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, Rany Saeye of Egypt won the race in 14.7 ahead of Senegal’s duos of Elhaji Jalo (15.0) and Bissentry Mendy (15.3). In the men’s 400m, Valentine Wesonga of Kenya finished first, clocking 47.6secs with his compatriot Evans Omulo second in 47.8. Ghana’s Robert Annak placed third in 48.2.

South Africa duo of Princess Rauhandalala (4:36.6) and Baloyi Thembi (4:47.0) dominated the women’s 1,500m, taking the top two slots. Kenya’s Beatrice Kosgei came third in 4:56.8. Elsewhere, Uganda’s representatives in the FUSA Games Makerere University women’s team recorded a 1-0 win against Masinde Muliro University to book a date with Kenya Methodist University in today’s today final to be played at Kenya Science grounds. The lone goal was scored by Barbra Nakiyenzi in the 30th minute.
