The Judicial Service Commission has appointed Athman Abdulhalim Hussein as Kenya's new Chief Kadhi.
In a statement, the JSC said it conducted interviews for candidates who had been shortlisted for the position and settled on Abdulhalim.
Hussein replaces Ahmed Muhdhar whose term ended in December 2022.
"Following deliberations and careful consideration of the various candidates, JSC has appointed Hon. Athman Abdulhalim Hussein as the new Chief Kadhi of the Republic of Kenya," the Commission said.
Before his appointment, Abdulhalim served as a Senior Principal Kadhi.
It first advertised a vacancy in the office of Chief Kadhi on April 14.
In May, JSC shortlisted five candidates for interviews.
They included Sukyan Hassan Omar, Idris Nyamagosa Nyaboga and Athman Abdulhalim Hussein, Kutwaa Mohamed Abdalla and Omari Hassan Kinyua.
The commission said there was a total of 24 applications that were received, out of which they shortlisted five candidates.
