Gospel singer Jane Muthoni quit her first marriage due to domestic violence.

The Materetha hitmaker told Ala C her marriage had gotten physical and being in limelight, she was no longer able to hide.

"I was judged by society when I left that marriage," she said.

"People said I left my marriage because I had become a celebrity but when they knew why I quit, some came to apologise. They found out the type of man my ex-husband was."

Jane said she was afraid of how people would take the news of her divorce.

She hid from her friends for six months.

"At some point, I started going crazy. I would forget where I am," she said.

"I would sometimes drive on the wrong side of the road. Some friends of mine helped me get out of the house," she said.

Jane advised her fans not to stay in a toxic relationship because of their children.

"Divorce is very painful but instead of harming the other person, it's easier to leave," she said.

"If the person constantly tells you that they will kill or harm you, it is good to take the threat seriously. Children will grow."

She said being in a toxic marriage made her want to try taking her life twice.

"I tried committing suicide by wanting to throw myself at a coming trailer in Gatundu in 2010," she said.

On that fateful day, I stood on the side waiting for a trailer, unluckily for me where I stood there was a bump so the lorry slowed down when it came close to me."

In her second suicidal attempt, her late sister saved her life

"I took all the pills that were in my house, put them together, and swallowed them," she said.

"I have since learned my lesson and cannot try that again.

"I now understand that the world is big enough to accommodate us and I am here for a reason."

Jane has since moved on. She held her wedding in August 2019.

She married a man who had invited her for a performance at one of his functions.

She has since relocated to America.
