Radio presenter Betty Opondo is mourning her 12-year-old son. The son passed away on Tuesday last week, while watching TV. He was on mid-term break.

Speaking to Word Is, she said: "Losing a child is very sad and it's something I would never wish any parent to go through. I'm confused and crashed."

Adding: "I was in Kisumu, where I work when I received a call from a strange number that my son had fallen down. It was in the morning around 8:33am. When I inquired more, I was just told 'Kevin ameanguka akiwatch cartoon on Nickelodeon.' Later I was called and told my baby was dead."

"That statement broke my heart. The doctors said he died at home but those who took him to the hospital didn't know."

In December, her son fell slightly ill and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and went back to school. Opondo, whose son used to stay with a house help in Nairobi, said he again started complaining about stomachache and was taken to a clinic.

He was treated but kept complaining that he still had stomach pains. Further treatment at Mater and Kenyatta hospitals appeared to resolve the problem.

The funeral arrangments for are underway ahead of the burial in Simero, Siaya county, on March 9.

"After I bury him, I'm going to start Kevin Foundation to help mothers with kids suffering from heart-related complications," Opondo said.

"When he was born, he had a heart problem and he was in and out of hospital for two years. Doctors assured me that he was okay."
